Colposcopy
Procedure Description
Biopsy of abnormal cells on your cervix.
What To Expect
Your doctor will examine your cervix using a colposcope (like binoculars), which magnifies the cervix. A solution will then be applied to make the abnormal cells turn white and a biopsy performed. This usually is not painful, and just causes mild cramping. Another solution is then applied to stop any bleeding.
Preprocedure
Prior to your visit, do not douche, use any vaginal creams or have intercourse for 48 hours. We recommend taking 400-600mg of Ibuprofen 30 min prior to your visit.
Postprocedure
Any cramping you may experience during the colposcopy will quickly resolve. You may have some spotting and will notice a black "chunky" material as well (which is from the solution that was used to stop any bleeding). You can resume normal activity after your office visit. You will be instructed on how and when you will receive your biopsy results.
